Very interesting and believable. Strikes me as ruminating on our tendency to be terrified by mere ideas. And an interesting take on the philosophical zombie, something that terrifies us while being a semantic argument that is *functionally meaningless* even if (though impossible to prove) true.

I love it because I can totally see this happening. If we found out a massive minority of the population were actually self-aware microbes puppeteering a host nervous system, we would be absolutely hostile. Even if they've been this way since birth, were outwardly identical to humans, believed themselves to be human, and weren't dangerous to any existing (un)conscious individuals. Just the idea of their existence is enough.

To question your own consciousness, the contradiction of reality and illusion.

Quite interesting as it also works as an exploration of Doppleganger Syndrome. I could see this as a delusion conjured by someone suffering from the condition, convinced the rest of the world are mindless zombies and they alone are "Real"

Matt isn't talking about Imposter Syndrome, they're talking about Capgras delusion.

I think this is a social commentary on neurodivergence, its place in society, and how medicine affects that. Things like Autism and ADHD are bogged down with meds to "help" until the individual isn't themselves anymore.

More like schizophrenia than ADHD. Lots of schizophrenic people claim they understand “reality” better or “deeper” than the rest of us. ADHD and autistic people don’t tend to have that delusion.

This is great one! The majority of humans "having the self-awareness of a chat-bot" being the *norm* is terrifying. I want to think that the ancient virus is some sort of mutation to allow people more awareness/empathy. Questioning authority? Realizing that the entire political structure needs to be dismantle and rebuild differently because so many are suffering now? Whatever that virus is, I think I have it!
