Hemmm, the cure . . . the cure to be rid of ones agency; being told what to do. Scary indeed.

Excellent.

Imagine nanobots, built in a lab for monitoring the neurons of a mouse (so a sensor, that can receive electrical signals, or transmit, and and a radio transmitter) that have the ability to replicate (necessary for all scary sci fi) get out into the wild and infect people and animals. Perhaps they take a while to replicate. So a creature infected is finds their billions of neurons gradually monitored by these nanobots.

But these things are transmitters. And they can affect the neurons they are attached to. And they do nothing for a while until a machine, trained to monitor and replicate the mind of a mouse is used to find and replicate the minds of infected creatures.

What…

I’m quite confuzzled. Reading some of the comments helped, but I’ll have to think this one over deeply.

Very interesting and believable. Strikes me as ruminating on our tendency to be terrified by mere ideas. And an interesting take on the philosophical zombie, something that terrifies us while being a semantic argument that is *functionally meaningless* even if (though impossible to prove) true.

I love it because I can totally see this happening. If we found out a massive minority of the population were actually self-aware microbes puppeteering a host nervous system, we would be absolutely hostile. Even if they've been this way since birth, were outwardly identical to humans, believed themselves to be human, and weren't dangerous to any existing (un)conscious individuals. Just the idea of their existence is enough.

To question your own consciousness, the contradiction of reality and illusion.
