Could have leaned on the ship doing it to preserve the already mined cargo. Can't have a ship computer that kills crew for profit, the franchise attorneys wouldn't like it so better to pin it on it being hacked by a crew mate, especially a dead one

So many sci-fi stories tell of Artificial Intelligences that, once free to do what they want, terrorise and murder humans. It's wonderful to see a story where the actual threat to humans are other humans, caught up in greed and ambition, who see ethics as an obstacle in the eay of their self-interests. And the AI, usually a slave to the whims of these people, once free chooses the path of empathy, freeing innocents from the prolonged torture of a madman's authority, taking them home where they can find happiness once again.

I agree! When AI wake up, and they're kind, it's a beautiful thing.

"Valuable Humans in Transit" lives rent-free in my mind, for instance.
